How the Grinch Knit Christmas

One of my favorite holiday movies is the classic 1966 animated short, How The Grinch Stole Christmas. There’s the wonderful narration and voice acting of Boris Karloff, a script that closely mirrors the original book, an enjoyable Emmy-winning musical score, and, of course, an exceptional color palette.

The animated Grinch has a really delightful aesthetic. Some truly amazing pinks, some fantastic Grinchy lime greens, beautiful blues, and bold reds. Here are a few palettes I identified in the film:

Here’s a yarn palette of Cascade 220 colors:

Now, let’s talk Grinch knitwear. My first impulse on a Grinch inspired look would be to knit something striped or fair isle in a Grinchy color palette. This will get you a nice, subtle, Grinch look. I think any of these sweaters would be a fun choice to knit up in Grinch colors:

Or you could knit a colorful, Grinchy accessory instead:

A more direct jumping off point for a Grinch inspired look is to base your knit on The Grinch’s two sizes too small heart.

Just a red heart on a bright green background is enough to suggest The Grinch.

If you were to knit some designs that feature hearts in a Grinch colors, that would be a fun way to get a Grinch inspired look. I think all of these designs could look great in Grinch colors:

If you are more of a Cindy-Lou Who than a Grinch, you could make yourself a Cindy-Lou Who outfit by knitting a matching dress and collar in light pink. I think these patterns together would look adorably Who:

Finally, how about some patterns that were directly inspired by the Grinch? These are all cute designs. Quite a few were designed by Stephanie Miranda, who must be a Grinch fan too. I especially like the ear warmer and isn’t that Grinch doll fabulously done?

Well, I’m off to steal presents and holiday decorations from a town of well meaning, noisy innocents.

Which Grinch knit are you excited about? Or tell me, what’s your favorite holiday movie?
