Exploring the World of Film & Television Through Knitting

Ravenclaw Knits

Ravenclaws, with their intelligence and wit, will always shine in the classroom, and now they can stand out wherever they go – by wrapping themselves up in some incredible knitwear.

The Ravenclaw colors and mascot are a matter of personal preference. Do you prefer the blue and bronze color scheme of the books or the blue and silver of the films? Do you feel kinship with the majestic eagle or with the clever raven? One of the lovely things about crafting is that these design choices are literally in your hands.

I’ve gathered quite an assortment of knitting patterns here that will perfectly suit the wise Ravenclaw in your life. I hope you enjoy!

Mittens

I think a pair of color work mittens featuring either eagles or ravens would be an exciting project for the experienced knitter. Try Dianna Walla’s Wit Beyond Measure or Jacquline Rivera’s Raven Queen.

A more understated option is to knit fair isle mittens in Ravenclaw colors. Two fair isle mitten patterns I recommend are the Wisby mittens by the wonderful Sofia Capelle and the gorgeous Endpaper Mitts by Eunny Jang. You can of course knit these up in Ravenclaw colors, rather than red and gold.

Finally, I have to mention the Hogwarts Dueling Club Fingerless Mitts by Tanis Gray from the book Knitting Magic. These look extremely cool and magical. The design is created with beads! I’ve never knit with beads before and I’m always looking to try a new technique, so I think these look like a very appealing project.

Sweaters

As in my Hufflepuff knits post, first mention goes to talented designer Meghan Regan for their incredible Ravenclaw Sweater set. How cool, right?!

My next suggestion, would be to create a Molly Weasley letter sweater or a quidditch sweater in Ravenclaw colors. I have a whole post on Quidditch knits, if you are looking for more on the Quidditch sweater. Below are The Weasley Sweater by Alison Hansel and Quidditch Sweater by Anne Bergeron

While in the books Ravenclaw’s mascot is the eagle, in the movie this role is allocated to the raven. I love some of these moody raven themed sweaters. Get out your black eyeliner.

Another interesting option would be a sweater with a feather motif in Ravenclaw colors – like Fern & Feather by Jennifer Steingass or Eagle
by Sanne Fjalland Knit-Wear.

Hats

I found a couple of text-based Ravenclaw hats, which look like fun projects.

For a more graphic look, one of these designs may suit.

If you are looking for a simpler knit, a classic striped hat in Ravenclaw colors would be an easy project. Purl Soho patterns are always reliably well done. Try their very popular, free pattern, Super Soft Merino Hats for Everyone.

Scarves and Cowls

When I think of Harry Potter scarves, the house scarf comes immediately to mind, of course. If you are thinking of knitting a house scarf in Ravenclaw colors, be sure to check out my post all about house scarves: Hogwarts House Scarves, where I discuss house scarves in detail and provide a number of pattern options for knitting one of your own.

Here are a couple of cowl patterns that would look fabulous knit up in Ravenclaw colors:

Socks

There are a number of great sock patterns for Ravenclaw fans.

Plushies

If you would like to create your very own personal mascot, knit yourself a little raven friend or a noble eagle.

Luna Lovegood

Luna Lovegood is my favorite Ravenclaw and she has some incredibly unique looks in the Harry Potter films.

But, for this post, I would like to focus on the classic Luna outfit.

I think this jacket by designed by Drops is such a great match for Luna’s jacket:

A couple of alternative suggestions:

I think Luna is wearing a dress under the jacket, but if I was knitting this outfit, I would go for a skirt. I recommend the Shakerag Skirt
by NellKnits.

I love Luna’s ombre socks / leg warmers in this outfit. I would knit these simple leg warmers in a shifting shades of blue. You could make it even easier by buying color shifting or self striping yarn.

Finally, to nod to those amazing Spectrespecs, I suggest Luna Lovegood’s Spectrespecs Gloves by Stephanie Lotven.
